The Times Are A Changin’

It’s been just over four years since Alex Thomas launched The Oilers Rig, and the site has most certainly seen some changes since then. In that time, there’s been a complete turnover of writing staff which has brought us the complement of writers we now have, the addition of a site editor, a YouTube show, a podcast (and then no podcast, and then a podcast again, and now a summer hiatus for the podcast). With those changes come reflection on the direction the site is taking (sorry to disappoint some of you, but we’re not firing Megan) and whether or not we are doing our best to bring you quality Oilers content.

With all that said, you may remember that couple weeks ago, we posted this on twitter:

We can now tell you what those changes are and what that will mean for you, our readers.

We were approached by, and have made the decision to join, a blog network called The Sports Daily. It’s relatively new, but has a pretty broad presence among NFL and MLB teams. There are currently 11 NHL blogs on the site (and when we make the official move, we will be the 12th). This was not an easy decision for us, as we’ve built up quite a community here in our own little corner of the internet. We were worried about losing control of the content we produce, but have been assured that there are no requirements for us to meet – we have full editorial freedom and will continue to produce things we hope you like.

This network will also give us an opportunity to broaden our audience (though not our focus) and maybe get some different viewpoints about the team we all love.

What Does It Mean?

The day-to-day operations of our site will continue as they do now; things will just look a little different.

As you’ve probably noticed over the last year or so, we’ve had a lot of technical difficulties that have resulted in the site being down for hours at a time. With the switch to TSD, we shouldn’t experience those outages (and if we do, there’s someone else to look after those issues which is great because when Dave is working nights and Megan is teaching, there’s no one to address site issues until the evening).

You’ll still be able to come to and get to our content; we’ll have a redirect to our new site which will give you access to the same content you’ve been consuming for the last 4 years as well as a portal to some good content about other NHL teams, and other pro sports leagues.

In order to comment on our posts, you won’t need to have a Disqus account. You just need a name and a valid email address.

We’ve got a couple other things we’re going to try with the new site, and we’ll keep you updated on those fronts as well.

As always, if there’s anything you’d like to see happen (again, not firing Megan), let us know. We definitely appreciate the feedback and want to make sure that we’re giving you content that you’re interested in.

One Last Thing

This site wouldn’t be what it is without you, our readers. Without an audience, we’d just be a bunch of schmucks shouting into the void. You make this site worth maintaining, and for that we are forever grateful. Thank you for coming into our little corner of the internet and discussing our work and having opinions about what we say. Thank you for supporting us at our annual MS fundraisers. But most of all, thank you for making us your landing page for Oilers information. We know there are other options out there, and we’re so glad that we’re a choice that people make.

Onwards and upwards,

The Oilers Rig Staff
